HYBRID MINI-GRIDS

Hybrid Mini-grid Viability and Replication Potential: In 2008, Parallax was consulted by the Project Preparation Trust (PPT) in order to provide experience related to the installation and operation of mini-grids in South Africa.  Parallax’s projects on the Demonstration of Housing Energisation to reduce climate change and the Alleviation of Poverty through the Provision of Local Energy Services (APPLES) were included as case studies to clearly bring out the key success factors for rural energisation projects.  This report from PPT, on behalf of the national government Department for Minerals and Energy (DME) was an early example of the recognition of mini-grids as solutions for remote community energy access with great prospects in Africa.
